Incubation at the BIDC
Elvema Nutrition (Pty) Ltd was selected as a SMME for technical incubation as part of a Jobs Fund initiative at the Bio-manufacturing Industry Development Centre (BIDC).
The primary purpose of the incubation was the development of a range of a fortified instant porridge product containing a natural plant ingredient, Moringa Oleifera. Thereafter, Moringa-flavoured teabags and a Powershake formulation will also be developed.
The period of incubation would be from 1 January 2015 until 31 March 2016. The Moringa fortified porridges would be developed for three variants including kids, adult and advanced in vanilla flavour.
The CSIR will produce 1 ton prototype of each variant for market testing purposes which will be supplied in bulk packaging and which will have been tested to provide the correct nutritional information labeling.
Technology transfer will occur at the stage gate for this development in order to allow Elvema to have their porridge range contract manufactured according to specifications developed at the CSIR.
Moringa teabags are a second product to be developed for Elvema and the CSIR will produce 5000 teabags of the correct quality and labelling.
The third product to be developed is the Powershake which will also undergo strict quality control, stability testing as well as sensory evaluation.
Labelling, packaging design facilitation will be provided on all final accepted formulations for bulk packaging.
